CINCINNATI - The No. 23/21 Xavier University women’s basketball team defeated intrastate rival Akron Friday night at Cintas Center. The Musketeers improve to 7-2 while the Zips fall to 2-5.
- Xavier is now 5-7 all-time against Akron but the team has won the last four decisions versus the Zips. Akron was 7-2 versus XU from 1979 -1986 before the series went on a hiatus until 2000. XU is 4-0 versus Akron since then, including tonight’s victory.
- Xavier went on a 19-5 run over the first 7:21 of the game.
- Xavier’s first half defense was the best since holding Saint Joseph’s to 14 points on 6-24 shooting in last year’s 71-53 Xavier win at Cintas Center on January 16, 2008.
- Xavier’s largest lead of the contest was 25 points at the 13:16 mark of the second half.
- April Phillips matched her season-high for points with 12. Her career high is 16, set at Rhode Island last season.
- Xavier’s 61 rebounds was one shy of tying the all-time single game rebounding record of 62 set at Marquette in 1991. The Musketeers tie for second place all-time instead, a mark previously set at Detroit in 1995.
