CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Head Coach Steve Nester is pleased with the growing depth of his cross country team as the Xavier men placed fourth and the women third on a rain-soaked course at the Charlotte Invitational. The meet brings XU's season record to 21-7 (0-3 A-10) for the men and 23-7 (0-4 A-10) for the women.
The men were once again led by sophomore Tommy Kauffmann, last week's A-10 Performer of the Week. Kauffmann finished sixth with a time of 26:25 to lead seven Xavier runners in the top 25 of the nine-team, 89 runner field.
Senior Luke Beuerlein followed Kauffmann in ninth place at 26:40 on the 8K course. Clinton Womack was the third Xavier finisher in 11th place overall with a time of 26:52.
Freshman Keith Albrektson and sophomore Ben Nathan finished 19th and 20th with times of 27:39 and 27:40, respectively. Sophomore Matthew Riley was just behind them in 22nd at 27:48. Junior Drew Kaiser rounded out the seven top-25 finishers for the Musketeers with a time of 27:52.
"Through the first three meets I am very satified with the entire Men's team," said Nester. "They are highly motivated and really engage the competition during races."
The women's team was led by sophomore Christina Schneider, posting a 20:24 for 15th place. A trio of Xavier runners followed her, including Angela Menke (20:31), Caylin Howell (20:33), and Caitlin Thomas (20:33).
Freshman Kelsey Erlenbaugh was the fifth Xavier finisher in 27th overall at 27:04. Finishing 35th and 36th, Micayla McGinn and Bethany Moore crossed at 21:29 and 21:31, respectively.
Coach Nester is very pleased with Menke's contributions to the team since being added over the summer. Newcomers Erlenbaugh and McGinn have also stepped up to the challenge. Said Nester, "I am very glad that we added this meet to our schedule. To preview the A-10 Championship course should prove to be very beneficial down the road. I firmly believe that our best meets are ahead of us. Our front runners must step up over our remaining four meets."
The Musketeers will have the chance to improve against conferernce foes as they return to the same site in six weeks for the A-10 Championships.
The Musketeers will travel to the National Catholic Championships in Notre Dame next week in South Bend, Ind. Race time is set for 4:30 ET on Sept. 19.
