CINCINNATI - The Xavier women's golf team opened their 2008-09 season in Cincinnati at the Cincinnati Fall Classic. After a fog delay that put off the final round until 10 a.m., the Musketeers played the final 18 at Elks Run G.C. The team placed seventh overall at 948 (+84).
Georgia State won the tournament with a 16-over par performance, including medalist Iliska Verwey, who finished six-under par.
Sophomore Audrey Fellmeth shot a 78 in the final round to lead Xavier with a 233 (+17) for the tournament, earning her a tie for 20th place. Fellmeth's opening-round 76 tied her with junior Mary Beth McKenna for the low Xavier round of the tournament.
McKenna finished tied for 26th overall at 19-over (235) after a final round of 81. Said McKenna of the round, "I threw away a lot of shots." Senior Lindsay Cornell opened the tournament with a pair of 80's, followed by a final round 83 to finish tied for 41st at 243 (+27).
Freshman Michelle Winkler and sophomore Rachel Levi finished right behind Cornell. Winkler may have had first-tournament nerves during her opening-round 86, but quickly shrugged them off to close with rounds of 80 and 78 for 43rd place at 244 (+28). Levi tied for 44th overall, firing dual-83's on the first day followed by a 79 in the final round, totalling 245 (+29).
Junior Lindsay Steiner and senior Colette Ryan played as individuals. Steiner opened with an 86, but rallied with rounds of 77 and 78 to finish tied for 36th at 25-over. Ryan finished in 56th overall, closing with rounds of 92 and 99 for 75-over par.
The Musketeers are back in action almost immediately, traveling to Sunset Beach, N.C. for the three-day Sea Trail Intercollegiate this weekend. The tournament precedes the LPGA International Xavier Invitational, which Xavier will once again be hosting in Daytona Beach, Fla. from Oct. 10-12.
