Game Quotes
Xavier Players
“I just stayed with it, getting offensive rebounds and defensive rebounds. I just stayed with it the whole game, and then it started clicking. It’s a 40-minute game. You’ve got to stay with it.”
On XU’s missed free throws
“It’s something we’ve got to address. It will definitely come back and bite us in the future. You’re not going to be home all the time and so you’ve got to stay focused.”
On Coach Sean Miller’s comments to the team after the game.
“He said, ‘Always play hard, don’t get sloppy, and take good shots,’ so it will carry over to the next game.”
La Salle Head Coach Dr. John Giannini
“To say that I was very impressed [with Xavier] would be an understatement. They’re big; they’re skilled; they’re strong. They never get out of their defensive stance and lose their positioning. They pursue rebounds. I tip my hat to them. They’re really good.”
“‘Hungry’ wins a lot more than ‘happy’ wins, so they’ve [Xavier] got to stay hungry. All I know is that they won’t beat themselves. Maybe they miss free throws and lose a close game that way, but they’re pretty good. I take that back; they’re very good.”
“They’re a bad matchup for us. Most other teams we can get the ball inside. We don’t see many guards like B.J. Raymond who is 6-6 and 220. Usually our 6-5 guards can get the ball inside. They’re big and physical at a high level. As a coach, the thing I’m most impressed with is that they’re mentally strong. They react quickly.
Xavier Head Coach Sean Miller
“The first four minutes of the second half, we played about as well as we can play. We had some of the best ball movement we’ve had. We had a dominant performance, defensively, in the first half.”
On Jason Love
“‘Every coach’s dream,’ is how I’ll describe him, and I don’t care what league you’re coaching. He’s just a fantastic kid. It’s contagious. Today I thought he was the best player on the team. Jason Love is a winner. He’s by far our team’s best defender and he’s always a high-effort player. I’m really pleased with his effort.”
“Our free throw shooting is the negative. Nineteen for 36, we’ve clearly regressed. We’ve shot 20,000 free throws since Christmas [in practice], and we’ve made 84 percent. We chart every free throw. When you come up empty [at the line], it’s almost sometimes like a turnover.”
“Brad [Redford] deserves more compliments for his defense than for anything else. He’s a really difference maker [on offense]. He and B.J. [Raymond] were 7-for-14 from the three [point line].
