Volleyball Sweeps Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. - The Xavier volleyball team picked up a three-game sweep of Atlantic 10 foe Rhode Island, 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-15), at URI's Keaney Gymnasium. Freshman Alex Smith recorded a match-high 13 kills in the contest.
Freshman Stephanie Vorherr got under a match-high 13 digs while sophomore Michelle Matia was impressive at the net, tallying a career-high three solo blocks to go along with two assisted blocks.
Xavier (10-8, 3-1 A-10) fell behind 3-1 to the Rams to open the match but quickly fought back to a 6-6 tie. The Musketeers broke open the set with a 4-0 run which included two kills from senior Kelly Ruth. URI never got closer than to within two the rest of the frame. XU held the four-point advantage, 20-16, and finished the game with a 5-1 run to take the 25-17 win.
Rhode Island (5-11, 0-5 A-10) kept the second set much closer as there were 10 tied scores and four lead changes in the frame. The last tie of the game came at 18-all but a kill from Matia gave the Musketeers the lead for good. Another kill from Matia gave XU set point at 24-20 and the Musketeers took the set with a kill from Smith (25-21).
The third set had one tie, 1-1, and Xavier controlled the rest of the frame. The Musketeers found themselves holding a five-point lead after a kill from senior Lauren Kaminsky. XU led by as many as 11 in the set but ended the match with a 10-point third-set win, 25-15.
The Rams were led by Caitlyn Welsh with 11 kills and and Kalyn Klaess with six digs.
The Musketeers return to action on Saturday with an A-10 matchup at Fordham in Bronx, N.Y. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Rose Hill Gym.
