Wearing "retro" jerseys No. 16/17 Xavier (22-5, 10-3 Atlantic 10) defeated George Washington (8-16, 2-10 A-10), 71-53. The win was the fourth in a row for the Musketeers over the Colonials, and their 16th in the last 19 meetings between the programs. The Musketeers now lead their all-time series with the Colonials 23-9.
The Musketeers wore jerseys in the style of jerseys from the 1994-95 and 1995-96 seasons, Skip Prosser's first two seasons as Xavier's head coach. The jerseys read "Musketeers' across the front instead of "Xavier".
Five different Musketeers scored in double figures. C. J. Anderson led the Musketeers with 14, eight in the final 2:24 of the game including the first three-pointer of his Xavier career. B. J. Raymond and Brad Redford each contributed 12 and Danté Jackson and Derrick Brown each had 11. Damian Hollis led George Washington with 15.
The Musketeers have won 23 straight Atlantic 10 Conference games at Cintas Center, its on-campus arena (8-0, 2006-07; 8-0, 2007-08; and 7-0, 2008-09). Xavier is now 119-17 (.875) at home during its nine seasons, and 61-10 (.859) against Atlantic 10 competition at home.
XU held George Washington to .386 shooting, the 16th time this season it has help opponents under 40 percent.
Freshman Brad Redford, the A-10's three-point percentage leader at 45-94 (.479), hit 4-of-6 from beyond the three-point arc.
Runs
George Washington scored the game's first basket with 17:52 remaining in the first half. But XU went on a 23-4 run to go up 23-6 at the 9:34 mark. B. J. Raymond led the way with seven points during the run, and Brad Redford and Danté Jackson added six points each on two three-pointers each.
Leading 36-20 at half time, Xavier began the second half with an 8-0 run to stretch its lead to 44-20 at the 17:14 mark. Jason Love, B. J. Raymond, C. J. Anderson and Danté Jackson each had two points during the run.
Trailing 47-23 with 15:04 to go, George Washington went on a 13-2 run to cut the lead to 49-36 with 9:37 remaining. Wynton Witherspoon led the Colonials with eight points during the run.
Behind 58-40 with 5:53 left, George Washington scored seven unanswered points to close to 58-47 with 3:50 to go. Tony Taylor led the Colonials with three points.
Up Next: Xavier travels to Philadelphia to play the Saint Joseph's Hawks on Thursday, February 26, at 7:00 p.m. Saint Joseph's took two of three from XU last season, the last of the three games coming in the semi-finals of the Atlantic 10 tournament in Atlantic City on March 14, 2008. Senior Pat Calathes paced the Hawks' 61-53 win with 24 points and eight rebounds, while Josh Duncan led Xavier with 11 points off the bench.
