No. 9 Xavier (20-2, 8-0 Atlantic 10) had four players score in double figures as it won its 11th straight game by defeating Temple (12-9, 4-3 A-10), 83-74. B.J Raymond scored 24 points to pace the Musketeers while Derrick Brown and Jason Love each scored 13 points and Brad Redford chipped in12 points. Brown collected eight rebounds and Terrell Holloway had three assists and four steals. The Owls were led by Sergio Olmos with 18 points, Lavoy Allen with 14, Dionte Christmas with 12, and Ryan Brooks with 11. Allen had 14 rebounds and Christmas dished out eight assists.
Xavier is now 117-17 (.873) overall during its nine seasons at Cintas Center, and 59-10 (.855) against Atlantic 10 competition in its on-campus home arena. The Musketeers have won 21 straight conference games at home (8-0, 2006-07; 8-0, 2007-08; and 5-0, 2008-09).
Xavier has now won 11 straight games, tying for the most consecutive wins in Sean Miller's five years as head coach. The Musketeers also won 11 straight games last season.
With tonight's victory, XU has reached the 20-win mark for the fourth consecutive season under head coach Sean Miller, and registered its 12th 20-win season in the last 13 seasons. It is the earliest in a season XU has recorded its 20th victory.
Xavier is now 15-0 during the month of February for this season and last two years combined. The Musketeers were 7-0 in 2007 and 2008 in the month of February, and began this February 1-0.
Xavier shot 51.7 percent (30-for-58) from the field, the fifth time in the last six games the Musketeers have shot better than 50 percent from the field. During those six games XU is hitting 52.7 percent (167-for-317) from the field.
B.J. Raymond continued his torrid offensive play with 24 points tonight, giving him four straight games with 20 or more points. During those games he is averaging 22.5 ppg., hitting 68.3 percent (28-for-41) of his shots from the field, 65.4 percent (17-for-26) from behind the three-point arc, and 81.0 percent (17-for-21) from the free throw line. He also became the first Xavier player to scored 20-plus points in four straight games since David West was a sophomore during the 2000-2001 season.
After being shut out the past three games (0-for-8 three-pointers), Brad Redford came alive from behind the three-point arc, connecting on 4-of-7 from behind the three-point arc for 12 points.
For the first time since he was a freshman, Dionte Christmas was held with without making a three-pointer for two straight games.
Career/Season Highs
Terrell Holloway had a career-high four steals. His previous high was two on four different occasions.
Dionte Christmas tied his career high with eight assists. He also had eight assists at Richmond (1-31-07).
Trailing 9-4 at 17:08, Temple went on a 10-0 run to take a 14-9 lead at 12:24. Sergio Olmos scored six points to lead the Owls. Xavier immediately responded with a 14-4 run to take a 23-18 lead at 8:08. B.J. Raymond paced the attack with six points on back-to-back three-pointers while Brad Redford and Jason Love each chipped in three points apiece.
Leading 42-39 at 16:17 of the second half, XU went on a 10-0 run to take a 52-39 lead at 13:25. Jamel McLean, Dante Jackson, and B.J. Raymond each scored three points for the Musketeers.
Up Next: Xavier embarks on two-game road trip beginning at Duquesne on Saturday, February 7, at 7:00 p.m. XU leads the all-time series with the Dukes 25-16, including four of the last five meetings. Last year, the 10th-ranked Musketeers defeated Duquesne 75-48 at Cintas Center. XU displayed its balanced attack as Derrick Brown, C.J. Anderson, and B.J. Raymond each scored 13 points and Jason Love added 12. Brown collected 11 rebounds and Anderson 10, while Stanley Burrell dished out a career-high 12 assists. The Musketeers held the Dukes to just 30.6 percent shooting from the field.
