Derrick Brown Selected By Charlotte In NBA Draft Second Round

CINCINNATI --- Xavier University graduate Derrick Brown, a 6-8 forward, was selected in the second round of tonight’s 2009 NBA Draft by the Charlotte Bobcats with the 40th overall pick.
XU has now had four former players drafted all-time in the NBA Draft first round and seven former players drafted all-time in the NBA Draft second round. Overall, Brown is the 36th former Xavier player drafted all-time in the NBA Draft.
Xavier has now had nine alumni selected in the first or second round of the NBA Draft since 1990. The previous four second round selections during that time include Lionel Chalmers (33rd by the L.A. Clippers), David Young (41st by Seattle) and Romain Sato (52nd by San Antonio) in 2004 and Derek Strong in 1990 (47th by Philadelphia). Strong played 10 NBA seasons. The trio drafted in 2004 have the distinction of being the last XU players drafted prior to this year.
Xavier’s previous first round NBA Draft selections include David West (18th overall by New Orleans in 2003), James Posey (18th overall by Denver in 1999), Brian Grant (“lottery pick” at eighth overall by Sacramento in 1994) and Tyrone Hill (“lottery pick” at 11th overall by Golden State in 1990). West, an NBA All-Star selection each of the last two seasons, just completed his sixth season with New Orleans. Posey, a two-time NBA Champion, just completed his 10th NBA season and was a teammate of West this past season in New Orleans. Grant played 13 NBA seasons and Hill played 14 seasons before retirement.
Brown, a 2008-09 Atlantic 10 Conference Second Team and NABC District 4 First Team selection, finished his three-year Xavier career with 1,096 points, which is good for 36th place on XU’s all-time scoring list. Brown led the team in rebounding each of his final two seasons, including 6.1 rpg. this past season to go with 13.7 ppg., which ranked second on the team. Xavier won three straight Atlantic 10 Conference Regular Season Championships during Brown’s three-year career and compiled an 82-24 (.774) combined record. XU reached at least the NCAA Tournament Second Round in each of his three seasons, including the Elite Eight in 2008 and the Sweet 16 in 2009. XU won at least 25 games each season, including a school record 30 wins in 2007-08 and a 27-8 mark this past season.
