Puerto Rico Tip-Off Championship
San Juan, Puerto Rico
Xavier won the championship game of the O'Reilly Auto Parts Puerto Rico Tip-Off with an impressive win over No. 13 Memphis, the defending National Runner-up.
Xavier's defense came up big again, holding a Memphis team that came in averaging 84.2 ppg. to 58 points on 32.7 shooting from the field. Another key was the fact that Xavier handled the Memphis pressure defense, turning the ball over only 11 times.
Xavier led 32-29 at halftime behind 11 points from sophomore Jamel McLean. Freshman Terrell Holloway finished with a game-high 13 points (10-of-10 free throws), while senior B.J. Raymond added 11. Senior C.J. Anderson (10 with seven rebounds) also scored in double figures, while a game-high and career-high 12 rebounds from junior Jason Love helped XU win the rebounding battle, 44-40. Anderson was named the MVP of the tournament.
The game was tied 53-all with under three minutes left. A free throw from Love at 2:50 put XU ahead for good at 54-53. That was followed by a big steal and a conversion at the other end of a three-point play by sophomore Danté Jackson that extended the XU lead to four at 57-53 with 2:25 left. XU free throws helped hold of the Tigers in the closing minutes.
