MacLean Leads Marshall Invitational on the Heels of Two Record-Breaking Rounds

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – Junior Sebastian MacLean had a record-breaking day in the opening rounds of the 41st Annual Marshall Invitational. MacLean sits in first place after sinking 13 birdies and presently holds a three-stroke lead over his nearest competitor. The Musketeers currently sit in second place behind Ohio State with a team score of 556 at the par-71 6,534-yard Guyan Country Club course.

MacLean had the lowest 18-hole score in tournament history after shooting a blistering 63. MacLean shot a bogey-free first round with eight birdies to go 8-under-par. The previous record was a 65 that had been set on five different occasions, the most recent being in 2008. The 63 also tied a Guyan course record and it was MacLean’s career-best round. The Bolivia native came out in the second round of 18 to card a 2-under-par 69 off five birdies and two bogeys. MacLean's 63 ties a school record.

Sophomore Herbert Day shot rounds of 70-67—137 (-5) to sit tied for fourth place. Senior Alan Glynn had rounds of 68-71—139 (-3) to end tied for 18th after 36 holes. Peter O’Neill was the fourth player for XU after firing a first round of 73 and a second round of 77 to finish tied for 79th. Chris Burger had rounds of 76-75—151 to sit tied for 81st. Nic Helser is also competing and fired rounds of 70-74—144.

Head Coach Doug Steiner was pleased with the efforts of his team. “They have all been competing well in practice so I wasn’t surprised that it translated to competition. It is always surprising to have someone break tournament records, but our team has that in them.”
