HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – Junior Sebastian MacLean won his first career tournament title, set another individual tournament record and helped Xavier set a team record at the 41st Annual Marshall Invitational. The Musketeers captured second place after shooting a tournament-record team score of 271 on the par-71 6,534 Guyan Country Club.
MacLean won his first outright tournament title after shooting a final-round 65. He has previously tied for first when he was a freshman at the UMB Bank Missouri Tiger Invitational. His tournament total of 17-under-par 197 broke the previous record set by University of Akron’s Blake Satter in 2005 by five strokes. MacLean had tough competition throughout the round from other golfers, with Wright State’s Charlie Woll setting a new course and tournament record with a 62. MacLean's 197 ties a school record set by Tim Donovan.
Four Musketeers went below-par to card a team score of 271. Xavier and Virginia Tech set the lowest 18 hole team score which had been previously held by Ohio State. The Musketeers and the Hokies also had the lowest third round team total in tournament history. The previous low was a 273 set by the University of Louisville in 2005. The Musketeers final score of 827 (274-282-271) put them seven shots behind Ohio State.
Several other Musketeers had career-best days. Senior Herbert Day had the best finish of his collegiate career, earning fifth place with a 9-under-par 204. His previous best finish came at the 2010 Atlantic 10 Championships where he earned ninth place. Day also shot a 4-under-par 67 in the final two rounds, which broke his previous career-best by one stroke.
Senior Alan Glynn ended tied for 40th place with a 2-over-par 215. Senior Peter O’Neill shot a 2-under-par 69 to finish the tournament with a 6-over-par 219 to earn 62nd place. Chris Burger also carded an under-par round, shooting a 70 to end in 72nd place with an 8-over-par 221. Nic Helser had two career bests. His final first round score of 1-under-par 70 was his lowest career round and his final score of 2-over-par 215 shattered his previous career-best tournament total by 10 strokes.
