Volleyball Suffers a 3-1 Setback at Dayton

DAYTON, Ohio - The Xavier volleyball team suffered a setback at the hands of conference rival Dayton (20-25, 25-18, 25-14, 25-16) at Frericks Center on the campus of UD Friday evening. Sophomore Kelsey Dunaway led the Musketeers with 10 kills.
The Musketeers fall to 13-7 on the season and 5-2 in the conference, while the Flyers improve to 14-5 on the season and a perfect 7-0 in A-10 action.
Dunaway led the Musketeers with 10 kills. Red-shirt sophomore Alex Smith and sophomore Sarah Brown were close to double digits in kills as well with nine and eight kills respectively. Brown was just shy of recording her second double-double of the season, after getting under 16 digs. Smith was the most accurate at the net with a .320 hitting percentage (9-1-25).
Setter Aubree Smith got 33 assists to go with six digs and two kills. Junior libero Stephanie Vorherr got under 16 digs.
The first set was back-and-forth characterized by long rallies. The Musketeers used a balanced approach at the net getting four kills from Brown and Dunaway and three from Matia and Alex Smith. The Musketeers outhit the Flyers in the first set .341 to .244. Xavier's first set win was the first time Dayton has dropped a set in three consecutive matches.
UD's Rachel Krabacher dominated the second set, notching 10 kills for a .421 hitting percentage. The Flyers jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead as Xavier called its first timeout and never looked back. XU was able to get within two, but was unable surpass the Flyer lead.
The third set was back and forth in the beginning, but the Flyers went on a 15-8 tear to take the third set 25-14. The fourth set was taken by UD 25-16 despite a late surge by the Musketeers.
UD was led by Rachel Krabacher who had a match-high 25 kills. Samantha Selsky had a match-best 46 assists. Attendance at UD's Frericks Center was 2,014, the Flyers' largest crowd of the season.
Xavier's next match will be on Friday, Oct. 21 as the team travels to the Bronx, N.Y., to take on the Fordham Rams for a 7 p.m. match. Be sure to check back on GoXavier.com for more news about Xavier volleyball.
