Musketeers Overpower IPFW in 86-63 Victory

CINCINNATI- The 13/14 Xavier Musketeers had a dominate victory over the IPFW Mastodons, winning 86-63. Senior guard Tu Holloway made his 2011-12 season debut and had a game-high 24 points.
Xavier improves to 2-0 for the season as IPFW drops to 1-1. Xavier now leads the all-time series 4-0.
Holloway dished out six assists and reeled in five boards to go along with his 7-for-10 shooting from the field and 2-for-3 from behind the three-point line. Holloway converted on 8-of-11 of his free-throw attempts.
Lyons made up for his slow start in the second half as he scored 19 of his 21 points after intermission. Lyons made all seven shots in the second half and ended 8-from-14 from the field and 4-of-6 from three-point range.
Freshman guard Dezmine Wells had a career-high 16 points and pulled in a career-high seven rebounds. Wells shot 6-for-9 from the field and 2-for-4 from long range. The presence of senior center Kenny Frease was felt down low as he swatted away six shots.
The Musketeers jumped out to a 20 point lead to start the second half. Lyons and Wells connected on another highlight worthy ally-hoop that energized the crowd of 9,873 that were in attendance. Frease stole the ball in the paint on the opposite end, and Lyons charged up the court that led to the Wells slam.
The Musketeers were a complete team tonight as they effectively stopped IPFW allowing the Mastodons to shoot 31.3 percent (21-from-67). XU shot 56.1 percent (32-for-57) from the field and an astounding 52.4 percent (11-for-21) from behind the arc.
Xavier entered intermission with a 36-22 lead over IPFW. Dezmine Wells led all scorers with 12 points at the half.
Wells impressed the crowd early with seven of the Musketeers first 14 points off of 3-for-4 shooting from the field. XU went on a 9-0 run early in the game, which included Holloway's first points of the season. Holloway brought the ball up off an IPFW missed three-pointer, and answered with a deep trey on the left wing.
.Xavier out-rebounded IPFW 25-17 and held the Mastodons to 27.3 percent (9-of-33) shooting from the field in the first half. Xavier shot 44.8 percent (13-of-29) from the field and 54.5 percent (6-of-11) from behind the arc in the first half.
Frank Gaines of IPFW had a team-high 22 points including 11-for-11 from the charity stripe.
