Senior All-American Tu Holloway scored 24 points in his 2011-12 debut to lead Xavier (2-0) past IPFW (1-1), 86-63. Mark Lyons added 21 points, including 19 in the second half, while Dez Wells chipped in 16. Wells grabbed 7 rebounds, and Holloway dished out 6 assists. IPFW was led by Frank Gaines who scored 22 points and Michael Kibiloski who added 13. Isaiah McCray grabbed 10 rebounds and Jonny Marlin had 5 assists.
Xavier is now 151-18 (.893) all-time at Cintas Center and 73-8 (.901) against non-conference opponents since moving into it on-campus arena for the 2000-01 season. XU currently has a 10-game winning streak dating back to 2010-11.
Xavier shot 56.1 percent (32-for-57) from the field, including 67.9 percent (19-for-28) in the second half. The last time XU shot 50 percent or better in a game was against La Salle on February 22, 2011, when the Musketeers shot a sizzling 62.5 percent (35-for-56).
Mark Lyons scored 21 points for the Musketeers, but it was a tale of two halves for the junior guard. He scored just 2 points on 1-of-7 shooting in the first half, but went 7-for-7, including 4-for-4 from behind the 3-point arc, in the second half to post 19 points.
All-American Tu Holloway ranks 26th on XU's all-time scoring list with 1,262 points.
He is 13 points away from joining the top 25 scorers in XU history. The No. 25 spot is currently held by Jerry Helmers (1969-72), who scored 1,275 points during his Xavier career.
Kenny Frease had a career-high 6 blocked shots. His previous high was 5 blocks against Pittsburgh in the NCAA Tournament (3-26-09). It was the most blocks by an XU player since Jason Love had 6 swats against Dayton (1-16-10).
Freshman Dez Wells is averaging 14 ppg in his two contests as a Musketeer with three 3-pointers and 11 rebounds.
XU is shooting 48.6 percent (17-for-35) from behind the 3-point arc this season with six different players hitting at least one 3-pointer. Mark Lyons leads XU with six 3-pointers on 11 attempts.
Runs
Trailing 6-5 at 16:40, XU went on a 9-0 run to take a 14-6 lead at 13:35. Dezmine Wells scored 4 points and Tu Holloway hit a 3-pointer to pace the Musketeers.
Up Next: The Musketeers welcome the Miami Redhawks to Cintas Center on Friday, November 18, for a 7 p.m. contest. Xavier leads the all-time series with Miami, 51-47, including wins in four of the last six meetings. In last year's game at Millett Hall in Oxford, the Redhawks led 28-19 at halftime and held off a Musketeer rally in the second half to defeat Xavier, 75-64. Trailing 62-48 with 5:32 remaining, XU cut the lead to 64-62 with 2:41 on the game clock, but could never grab the lead. Mark Lyons and Tu Holloway each scored 18 points to pace the Musketeers, Jamel McLean scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Kenny Frease had 11 points and nine boards. Miami was paced by Julian Mavunga with 24 points.
