CINCINNATI - Junior Calesse Cardosi made the most of her late addition to the Xavier cross country teams list of runners, winning her first collegiate meet at the Mount St. Joseph Invitational meet at Heritage Park Thursday evening.
She led the women's cross country to a second place finish with 34 points, while the men finished second with 42 points in the first meet of the season. The Musketeers battled through a sandy 5K course in 95-degree heat against four other area teams.
Cardosi knocked out a time of 19:41 to lead the field of 32 runners. She was followed by freshman Audrey Ramos who placed second with a time of 20:14. Senior Micayla McGinn finished ninth (21:24), freshman Emily Kuhn was one spot behind her with a time of 21:33, and senior Courtney Heys rounded out the scoring runners with a time of 22:00, which was good for 12th place. Senior Samantha Milroy was the runner left out of the scoring, finishing 14th at 22:07.
Freshman Travis Hawes had a strong second half in his first collegiate race to lead Xavier's pack of top men's finishers. Hawes crossed the finish line fifth (16:47), with freshman Connor Buccholz one place back in sixth (16:49), and freshman Corey Zielinski in seventh (16:52).
The Musketeers' fourth-place finisher was freshman Aaron Moore, who place 11th with a time of 17:10. Rounding out the scoring was sophomore Keith Schenkel who crossed with a time of 17:40, good for 13th place. Freshman Matt Orlando took 14th just six seconds behind Schenkel.
Head coach Dan Flaute inserted Cardosi into the lineup, after deciding to hold senior Anna Alrichs out of the meet.
Northern Kentucky won both races on the women's side scoring 25 points to win. Mount St. Joseph placed third (87 points), and Thomas More came in fourth (94 points). Cincinnati Christian didn't run enough athletes to qualify for a team score.
The Norse scored 18 points to take the win on the men's side. Following Xavier in third place was Cincinnati Christian with 86 points and Mount St. Joseph with 98 points. Thomas More ran just four runners and recorded no team score.
Xavier will roll out its top runners at next Friday's 30th Annual Queen City Invitational, being hosted by NKU. The 5K races begin with the women's meet at 5 p.m. and the men following at 5:45 p.m. at A.J Jolly Park Alexandria, Ky.
Last year the Musketeers won the traveling trophy between NKU and Cincinnati. Twelve other teams are expected to compete at the event, including the three other teams that competed at the Mount St. Joseph Invitational.
