CINCINNATI --- The Xavier University women's soccer team traveled to South Bend, Ind., to open the 2013 season today with an exhibition match at Notre Dame. Xavier plays its second and final exhibition match on Saturday when it hosts Miami (Ohio) at 7 p.m.
The two squads competed in three 30-minute segments this afternoon. The first segment pitting the starters of each team ended in a 1-1 tie. Xavier took the early lead in the first 30-minute session as freshman Tori Doss found the back of the net from 15 yards out at the 12:28 mark. XU held the lead until late in the session when XU was unable to clear a ball deep in its end. The Irish capitalized on the mistake with the equalizer at 26:48.
Notre Dame held a 1-0 advantage for the second 30-minute session. The Irish also took the third 30-minute session, which gave both teams' reserves extensive action, 3-0.
Head coach Woody Sherwood said he learned a lot about his team today. "First I'd like to thank Notre Dame for the opportunity to test us today," said Sherwood. "I think our kids learned a lot playing against a high-level team like that. We made a couple critical mistakes and, as very good teams do, they capitalized. For about 70 minutes we hung in there and executed our game plan very well."
