CINCINNATI - The Xavier women's soccer team fell, 1-0, to Providence in a BIG EAST matchup on Thursday night. The Musketeers (3-10-3; 0-5-1 BIG EAST) return to the field Sunday when Xavier hosts Butler.
In the Musketeers' annual Breast Cancer Awareness game, Xavier head coach Woody Sherwood used a new look, inserting seniors Margaret Woods and Alyssa Tindal, as well as freshmen Skylar Groth and Carly Alfano into the starting lineup.
Woods, starting in her second game of the season, led the Xavier attack in the first half with two shots, including a shot from inside the box that was collected by Providence goalkeeper Kristyn Shea for a save.
Sophomore Tori Doss, Xavier's leading scorer on the season with three goals, provided a spark off the bench for the Musketeers, coming in midway through the first half to help the offensive attack. The Musketeers used fast break counter attacks to get behind the Providence defense and create scoring chances, but were unable to find the back of the net before the first period ended.
The Xavier defense prevented the Friars from taking the early lead, led by veterans junior Maria Libertin and senior Meredith Gleichert. The backline was bolstered off the bench by sophomore Courtney Kobashigawa, who entered the game midway through the first half and helped prevent the Friars from scoring before the break. Senior goalkeeper Katie Markesbery chipped in with four first half saves to send the game into halftime in a 0-0 draw.
In the second half, Xavier's defense limited Providence's offensive opportunities, allowing only two good looks at the goal, but a shot from Friars' leading scorer Catherine Zimmerman off of a pass from Rachel Ugolik found the back of the net to give the Friars the 1-0 lead at the 60' mark.
After the score, the Xavier offense increased its attack, led by Doss' two shots on goal. The Musketeers' best opportunity to even the score came late in the game when Groth had a good look at the goal inside the box, but the ball was intercepted by a Friar. After the shot was blocked, the Musketeers had another opportunity off the ricochet, but Xavier was unable to convert. The Musketeers ended the game with seven shots, but were unable to score, ending the game 1-0 in favor of Providence.
Xavier returns to action on Sunday Oct.19 at 1:00 p.m. when the Musketeers host Butler. The match will be streamed on the BIG EAST Digital network in partnership with FOX Sports GO. Live stats will be available from GoXavier.com.
