VILLANOVA, PA. - The Xavier women's soccer team fell, 1-0, at Villanova after the Wildcats connected on a last-minute goal. Xavier (3-8-2; 0-3-0 BIG EAST) continues its road trip, traveling to Marquette for a Sunday match.

Xavier started the game attacking offensively, collecting its first shot on goal a minute into the match with an attempt from junior Catherine Allon. The Musketeers kept the offensive pressure on the Wildcats, taking seven first half shots, including a look from freshman Gabby LaMere that ricocheted off the crossbar, but were unable to connect before halftime.

The Xavier defense, which held No. 17 Georgetown scoreless for over 80 minutes on Sunday, prevented the Wildcats from jumping in front. Senior goalkeeper Katie Markesbery collected Villanova's three shots on goal for saves, marking the fourth straight match where the Musketeers haven't allowed a first half goal, sending the game to the half tied, 0-0.

Allon started off the second half the same as the first, taking a shot on goal less than two minutes into the period. A save by Villanova goalkeeper Emma Meyer prevented the score, keeping the game tied, 0-0. The Musketeers continued to create opportunities on offense, taking 12 shots total, led by Allon's three shots on goal.

The scoreless draw remained until the 88:45 mark when Villanova's Jessica Moskal knocked the ball to the right corner of the net off a pass from Amanda Vocelka to put the Wildcats up, 1-0. The Musketeers created two more opportunities to score on shots from Kenadie Carlson and Allon in the final minute, but were unable to connect.

"I'm at a loss for words," said Xavier head coach Woody Sherwood after the match. "To put on a performance like that and to lose the game in the last minute is heartbreaking for a bunch of kids who deserved better for the way they played."
