CINCINNATI - The Xavier women's soccer team moved to 3-5-2 on the season after tying Morehead State, 0-0, in double overtime on Friday evening at the Xavier Soccer Complex.
The Musketeer offense, led by sophomore forward Tori Doss, created a number of dangerous opportunities to pull ahead of the Eagles, including four shots, three on-goal, for Doss. Morehead State goalkeeper Elizabeth Floyd collected each of Doss' shots on goal, ending the game with three saves. Another two saves were attributed to the Eagles' team defense.
Xavier's defense held the Eagle offense scoreless despite 16 shots. Senior goalkeeper Katie Markesbery collected nine saves on 10 shots-on-goal, including a crucial big-time save off a penalty kick in the 79' to preserve the tie.
Markesbery, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, brought her career total to 427, moving her past Kelcey Ervick (1990-93) for Xavier's career saves record.
"That was a great college soccer match, certainly better than we saw on Sunday," said head coach Woody Sherwood. "That is a senior-laden NCAA Tournament caliber Morehead State team that is on a great run. I was proud of the way our kids responded after a poor outing on Sunday. Now we look forward to starting BIG EAST play on Thursday."
The Musketeers return to action when Xavier kicks off BIG EAST play against St. John's. The Musketeers will host the Red Storm on Thursday, Sept. 25 at 6:30 p.m. Live stats and a live video stream of the event will be available at GoXavier.com
