09.02.14 | Women's Soccer
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. - After falling just shy of a decision in the first three games of the season, Xavier women's soccer broke through to earn its first win, 2-0, Tuesday night at IUPUI (1-3-1).
The Musketeers (1-3) took the early lead, 1-0, on a shot from freshman Kenadie Carlson at the 18' mark. The goal, which proved to be the game winner, was the first of Carlson's Xavier career.
Xavier continued to press on offense in the first period, attempting nine shots total, including two that hit off the crossbar.
In the second period, a missed penalty kick allowed the Jaguars to threaten to draw even, but Xavier used its defense, anchored by senior goalkeeper Katie Markesbery, to maintain its lead. Markesbery collected five saves on the night to preserve the shutout, the 17th of her career.
Xavier increased its offensive attack over previous games, attempting 17 shots overall and eight shots on goal. At the 80:26 mark the Musketeers created breathing room when junior Megan Dalton scored from 14 yards out on the assist from junior Catherine Allon to put the Musketeers up, 2-0.
"We knew coming in tonight that IUPUI would high pressure us and be relentless pressuring the ball," said Xavier head coach Woody Sherwood. "To our credit, for the first time this season, we handled it well and knocked the ball around. For 70 of the 90 minutes we were very good. We had to weather a storm from IUPUI after the missed PK. Overall it was our best effort of the season. Now we have to set our sights on the match at Ohio on Friday."
Xavier travels to Athens, Ohio next to face Ohio University on Friday, September 5 at 4:00 p.m. The match against the Bobcats completes a tough five-game road swing to start the season. Check GoXavier.com for live stat information.
