Musketeers continue east coast road trip at Villanova on Saturday
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Xavier women's soccer team kept one of the top scoring offenses in the conference within striking distance for over 70 minutes, but a score off a penalty kick gave Georgetown a comfortable lead with limited time remaining on the way to a 3-0 loss for the Musketeers.
"Disappointing result today against a very good Georgetown team," said head coach Woody Sherwood. "We were still in the game, down a goal and gave up an unfortunate penalty kick and that probably put the game away for Georgetown. This may actually be the best we've played against them in our three years in the BIG EAST."
The Hoya's first goal came in the 15th minute as GU's Crystal Thomas found the ball at the far post off a deflected shot from the right side. Georgetown attempted 10 shots before the break, but junior goalkeeper Rachel Piccus collected four first half saves to keep Xavier within one score.
In the second period, the Musketeers held the Hoyas without a good look until a foul in the 18 yard box gave Georgetown an opportunity for a penalty kick. GU's Rachel Corboz found the corner of the net for the insurance goal. Less than eight minutes later, Corboz would score again to set the final score at 3-0 in favor of the Hoyas.
Five different Musketeers recorded shots, with the best opportunity coming just before halftime when the ball was played to senior Maria Libertin in the far corner of the 18-yard box. GU goalkeeper Emma Newins collected the attempt for a save and to keep the Hoyas in front.
"Unfortunately, several starters performed below expectations," said Sherwood. "But to our reserves' credit, they came on, played a lot of minutes and were very good today. We have a quick turnaround to great ready for another trip out east with Villanova this weekend."
Xavier plays game two of its three-game road swing against the Wildcats on Saturday, Oct. 17 at noon. Links to live stats will be available on GoXavier.com and live video will be available through the BIG EAST Digital Network.
