
Women’s Swimming Takes First, Men's Finishes Third at Butler Quad

Musketeers travel to UofL on Friday
FISHERS, Ind. – The Xavier men's and women's swimming teams opened the season with a pair of strong performances at the Butler quad meet. The women took first place of five teams, and 4-0 in head to head match-ups against the host Bulldogs, as well as Saint Louis, Wright State and Evansville. The men finished third of four, with a 1-2 record in head-to-head match-ups (Butler does not field a men's team) on a final leaderboard with less than 12 points separating the top three teams.
The Xavier women started the day taking the second and third spots in the 200 medley relay. The Xavier A team (Paxtyn Drew, Becca Titterton, Ashley Whiteley and Claire Brolsma) posted a time of 1:48.83. They were followed in by Caroline Gaertner, Haley Dresner, Annie Cummins and Tianna Vozar's team, with a time of 1:51.03.
To start the individual events, Mackenna Rife and Emily Wagner grabbed the top two spots in the 1000 free with times of 10:40.69 and 10:48.52, followed up by first, second and third place finishes in the 200 free for Katie Kerr (1:56.20 - 17th in XU records), Molly Kroeger (1:57.44) and Taylor Jach (1:57.66) respectively. Claire Brolsma also took home a first place finish in the 50 free, posting a time of 24.53.
The Musketeers swept the top three spots for the 200 backstroke, led in by Paxtyn Drew who took first place with a time of 2:06.84. Drew was followed in by a pair of freshmen who posted times that rank in the top-20 in Xavier records, Caroline Gaertner (2:08.49) and Laura Dicus (2:09.92).
The Xavier women had multiple scorers in each of the other events, including a third place finish in the 400 IM for Mikaela Saugstad, a third place finish, and a Xavier top-15 time, in the 200 fly for freshman Annie Cummins (2:11.82) and a second place finish in the 500 free for Rife (5:10.88),
The Musketeers closed out the individual events with a second and third place finish in the 200 breast for Hanna Martin and Becca Titterton, with Titterton's time of 2:28.28 placing her in Xavier's top-20 records for the event.
Xavier's women closed out the meet by taking second in the 400 free relay, with Brolsma, Kroeger, Kerr and Drew posting a time of 3:38.20 to bring the team's point total to 594, topping second place Saint Louis by more than 30 points.
The men opened the meet much like the women, taking second in the 200 medley with newcomer Michael Pettinichi joining Erik Biernat, Tony Miller and Luke Johanns to post a time of 1:36.39.
In the first individual events, Nick Strader started strong for the Musketeers, taking second in the 1000 free with a time of 9:57.49 and Alex Wolfred placed third in the 200 free with a time of 1:45.02.
In the 50 yard free, Xavier took the top two spots, with Rodrigo Suriano coming in first (21.20) and Johanns touching the wall just behind him (21.44). Suriano also took home the top spot in the 100 free with a time of 46.27 improving his Xavier best time from 46.42, a top-15 time in school records.
Newcomer Chase Baldwin collected a pair of third place finishes and set a top-20 time in Xavier records in the 400 IM, finishing in 4:15.63, as well as touching the wall in 1:57.37 in the 200 back.
Xavier closed out the individual events with second and third place finishes for Wolfred and Strader in the 500 free, and strong performances from Rob Van Kirk, Pettinichi and Matthew Dyer in the 200 breast. Both Pettinichi (2:11.97) and Dyer (2:12.60) entered Xavier's top-20 records for the event in their first collegiate meet.
The Musketeer men capped off the day by collecting the top spot in the 400 free relay, with Suriano, Biernat, Enrique Hernandez and Johanns finishing in a time of 3:06.80 to bring the Xavier men's score to 592.2, less than 12 points shy of first place Wright State's score of 603.5.
Xavier returns to action next weekend when the Musketeers travel south to take on Louisville. The dual with the Cardinals is set to begin at 5:00 p.m. at the Ralph Wright Natatorium on Friday, Oct. 9. Stay tuned to GoXavier.com for more information.
