Longtime Xavier athletic communications director to be honored on Nov. 18
CINCINNATI, Ohio – Longtime Xavier Associate Athletic Director for Communications Tom Eiser was named the recipient of the Cincinnati Sports Professionals Network (CSPN) Lifetime Achievement Award. Eiser will be recognized at the CSPN's eighth annual Awards Banquet at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 18 at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center.
"I have been fortunate to work with some special student-athletes, coaches and staff at Xavier University that have made what I do a labor of love," said Eiser. "It has been a privilege to share in thousands of memorable moments and the tremendous growth of the athletic department and the entire university.
"I love watching our students-athletes win championships and graduate, especially the ones that fought through tremendous odds. It's a treat to say that a big part of my job is telling our stories and using athletics to shine a spotlight on my alma mater. It makes it much easier to brag about all of this success, knowing the university's number one goal is to stay true to the integrity of our Jesuit mission."
Eiser is in his 30th year directing the athletic communications office, which handles communications, media relations, broadcast production, website, social media, publicity, publications, record-keeping and research for the school's 18 NCAA Division I sports. He has been the curator and director of the P. Douglas O'Keefe Xavier Athletic Hall of Fame on the Cintas Center concourse since its inception in 2005 and has served on the HOF selection committee since 1986, currently serving as its chair.
"Tom has played an integral part in the publicity and marketing efforts of Xavier University over the last 30 years," said athletic director Greg Christopher. "His relationships with the local and national media over the years have been invaluable to our athletic department, in specific to our men's basketball program. Tom has done a remarkable job and we commend him on his dedication to promote the success of our student-athletes both on and off the court."
A big part of Eiser's attention is focused on the nationally-ranked men's basketball program. In fact, he has worked all but three of Xavier's 900+ regular season and postseason men's basketball games since he was hired full-time in 1986. He began working with the men's basketball team in 1986 and has worked with five head coaches and promoted the team through each of its last 22 NCAA Tournament seasons.
In addition to his Xavier duties, Eiser has chaired I-AAA University Division Management Advisory Committee for the College Sports Information Directors of America and serves on the BIG EAST Conference Academic Affairs Committee and the BIG EAST Conference Marketing Team. Eiser, who is an active member of the College Sports Information Directors of America, the United States Basketball Writers Association and the Public Relations Society of America, has been a regular presenter at the annual CoSIDA/NACDA Convention. He received an award at the 2010 CoSIDA Convention in San Francisco for his 25 years of professional contributions to the sports information field.
Eiser began his professional career in sports information as assistant SID in 1985-86 at the University of Detroit. He was a student assistant SID at Xavier as an undergraduate from 1980-84, serving four years as the school's first-ever women's basketball SID.
Eiser is a 1984 graduate of Xavier University with a bachelor's degree in English, while also completing a summer program in British Media Studies at the University of Manchester. He also earned a master's degree in educational administration from Xavier in 2011.
