School Records Fall During Day One at CSU Magnus Cup

CLEVELAND - After the first of three days of competition, Xavier swimming collected a number of new personal records, and two new school records. The Xavier women stand in third place and the men stand in second with two days of competition remaining.
The Musketeer women started the meet by setting a new school record in the 200 free relay, with Paxtyn Drew, Ashley Whiteley, Caroline Gaertner and Claire Brolsma finishing in a time of 1:33.78 to take fourth place.
In the 500 free, Katie Kerr set a new school record time of 4:56.20 during preliminary heats, only to top her time in the finals, taking first place with a Xavier best time of 4:55.17. Mackenna Rife took fourth with a time of 4:59.49, and Jenna Wilkes finished sixth with the ninth best time in XU history, 5:04.09. Freshman Maggie Kauffeld also entered the Xavier records with her preliminary time, setting the 13th fastest time in school history with a time of 5:06.86.
In the 200 IM, Becca Titterton entered the Xavier top-20 times at 14 with a 2:10.51 finish.
In the 50 free Brolsma took sixth with a time of 23.73, improving her third-fastest time in Xavier records.
Four other Musketeers entered or improved their Xavier-best times: Gaertner (23.94 – fifth), Drew (24.04 –sixth), Laura Dicus (24.23 - T-11th) and Whiteley (24.32 - 15th).
The women closed the event by setting the fourth fastest time in school history in the 400 medley relay, with Gaertner, Dresner, Whiteley and Drew finishing in 3:50.28.
Xavier collected 320 points on the women's side, trailing only Duquesne (509.5) and Akron (470) out of the 10 teams competing.
The Xavier men began the day by placing second and fourth in the 200 free relay, with the Xavier 'A' team of Rodrigo Suriano, Bobby Snader, Enrique Hernandez and Tony Miller setting the fourth fastest time in school history by touching the wall in 1:22.10.
Xavier also took two of the top five spots in the 50 breast, with Michael Pettinichi touching the wall in 26.18 to take third and Snader taking fifth with a time of 26.66.
In the 500 free, the reigning BIG EAST champion Nick Foster led the Musketeers in, taking third with a time of 4:37.37.
The Xavier men collected another top-three finish in the 200 IM, with Chase Baldwin taking third with a time of 1:53.76, the 11th fastest time in school history. Erik Biernat followed him in with a time of 1:54.18 to take fourth.
In the 50 free Suriano took second place and moved up to fourth all-time in XU records with a time of 20.55. Miller set the sixth fastest time in school history in the prelims (20.87) before finishing fifth in the championship heat with a time of 21.03. Hernandez entered the school records for the event with a time of 21.22, 15th fastest in XU history. Knox Hitt entered the Xavier records at 19th with a time of 21.31 in the prelims.
The Xavier men closed the event with Nathan Runyon, Pettinichi, Biernat and Suriano setting a time of 3:25.81 in the 400 medley to take third place.
The Musketeers collected 506 points, standing behind only host CSU's point-total of 612.5.
Events resume tomorrow, with prelims starting at 9:00 a.m. and finals beginning at 5:00 p.m.
