Women Finish Third, Men Place Second at CSU Magnus Cup

CLEVELAND, Ohio - After three days of competition and a number of new personal and school records for the Musketeers, the Xavier swim program comes away from the Cleveland State University Magnus Cup with the women finishing third out of 10 teams, while the men took second place, falling only to host CSU.
Katie Kerr took second in the 1,650 free, setting the third fastest time in school history after touching the wall in 17:11.94. Mackenna Rife finished fourth with a time of 17:17.04 and Taylor Jach placed seventh with the sixth fastest time in XU records, 17:25.50. Jenna Wilkes' time of 17:33.39 stands as seventh best in XU records and Maggie Kauffeld enters the record book at 11th with a time of 17:39.68.
Four Musketeers competed in the 'A' final for the 200 back, with Paxtyn Drew leading the way, taking third with a time of 2:01.82. Caroline Gaertner took sixth, moving up to seventh with a time of 2:04.62. Kristen Liebert finished seventh (2:06.72) and Rife finished 10th (2:09.55) after improving to 11th in XU's records with a 2:06.15 time in prelims. Anne Locker also enter the Xavier record books with a time of 2:08.51 in the 'B' final, 15th fastest in the XU record books.
In the 100 free, Claire Brolsma upped her Xavier record time to 52.33 (seventh in XU records) to qualify for the 'A' final. Taylor Jach improved to 13th in Xavier records with a prelim time of 53.20 and Tianna Vozar entered the XU records for the event with a prelim time of 53.35 (15th).
Three Musketeers competed in the 'A' final for the 200 breast, with Hanna Martin leading the way with a seventh place finish (2:24.39) and Haley Dresner taking eighth with a time of 2:26. Becca Titterton rounded out the top 10 with a time of 2:31.21 after setting the 14th fastest time in Xavier records during prelims (2:26.41).
In the 200 fly, Kauffeld led a pair of Musketeers in the 'A' final, taking fifth and setting a new school record with a time of 2:04.88. Wilkes finished in a time of 2:10.84 after setting the eighth fastest time in school history (2:08.69). Cummins moved up to fifth in school history with a time of 2:08.19 in the 'B' final.
Brolsma, Gaertner, Molly Kroeger and Drew closed the event by setting the fifth fastest time in school history in the 400 free relay, finishing in 3:29.79.
The women finished with 1,022.5 points, trailing only Akron and Duquesne in the 10-team field.
On the men's side, Nick Foster opened the meet by taking second in the 1,650 free, with the school record holder finished in 16:11.87. Nick Strader placed fifth with a time of 16:32.32.
Erik Biernat took the top spot in the 100 IM, finishing in a time of 52.31.
In the 50 fly, the Musketeers took three of the top four spots, with Knox Hitt finishing first (22.39), followed in by Tony Miller in second (23.01) and David Bunnell in fourth (23.30).
In the 200 back, Xavier took spots two through four, with Chase Baldwin leading Xavier in to take second place with a time of 1:50.27, sixth fastest time in school history. Nathan Runyon's time of 1:51.37 was good for third place and ninth in XU records. Rodrigo Suriano took fourth with a time of 1:52.83.
The Johanns brothers led the Musketeers in the 100 free, with Luke Johanns taking fifth with a time of 46.73, and Sam Johanns finishing seventh with a time of 47.04.
Four Musketeers competed in the 'A' final of the 200 breast, with Rob Van Kirk, Robert leading the way with a fifth place finish in a time of 2:07. Matthew Dyer finished seventh after moving into the Xavier top-20 with a prelim time of 2:07.94. Eric Futscher finished eighth in a time of 2:09.17 and Owen Dougherty finished 10th with a time of 2:14.75. In the 'B' final, Michael Pettenichi moved up to 11th in Xavier records with a time of 2:07.60.
In the 50 back, Xavier had four of the top six finishers, led by Hitt in first place (23.49). Sam Johanns, took third (24.11), Baldwin finished fifth (24.72) and Runyon took sixth (25.02).
Alex Wolfred led a trio of Musketeers in the 'A' final of the 200 fly, taking fifth in a time of 1:54.99. Gage Mitchell took eighth (1:57.36) and Foster finished 10th (1:58.81). Bunnell's 'B' final time of 1:55.83 moves him into the top 15 in Xavier records.
The Xavier men closed the meet by taking second and fourth in the 400 free relay with Suriano, Biernat, Sam Johanns and Luke Johanns using a time of 3:02.95 to set the fifth fastest time in school history.
The Xavier men finished with 1625 points, trailing only host Cleveland State's point total of 1801.5.
