Johanns, Van Kirk Travel to AT&T Winter Nationals

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - Seniors Luke Johanns and Rob Van Kirk will travel to the northwest to represent Xavier at the AT&T Winter Nationals held in Washington from Dec. 3 through Dec. 5. Johanns is set to compete in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle. Van Kirk will compete in the 200 breast. Former Musketeer Armando Moss, a 2015 XU graduate, also qualified to compete in the 50 freestyle at the National Championships.
Johanns, a native of Eagan, Minn., is the reigning BIG EAST Champion and Xavier record holder in both the 50 and 100 free. The senior, who has captured the title of BIG EAST Swimmer of the Week twice in the 2015-16 season, is a two-time member of the All-BIG EAST team. Johanns has captured nine gold medals, helping the Musketeers capture back-to-back conference championships in Xavier's first two seasons in the BIG EAST.
Johanns' first event, the 50 meter free, is scheduled to be the final event during Thursday's competition. Johanns posted a season-best time of 20.31 to qualify for the event, just off his Xavier record time of 20.25, set in 2013. Johanns qualified for the 100 yard free with his Xavier-record time of 44.40 set during the 2015 BIG EAST Championships. The finals of 100 free are scheduled for Saturday, the final day of competition.
Van Kirk, a Cincinnati native, qualified for the 200 meter breast with a time of 2:21.71. Van Kirk holds top-10 Xavier records in both the 100 yard and 200 yard breast, as well as Xavier top-20 times in the 200 and 400 IM. The finals for the 200 breaststroke are scheduled for Saturday as well.
Moss, who finished his career at Xavier as one of the most decorated swimmers in school history, qualified for the Championships with a 50 free time of 20.53, also set during the 2015 BIG EAST Championships. The Nassau, Bahamas native took silver in the event, one of seven top-three finishes the two-time All-BIG EAST Team honoree collected at last year's championship.
Following the Winter Championships, the Xavier team will head into a hiatus from competition to prepare for its spring schedule that begins with a trip to IUPUI on Jan. 8 at 6:00 p.m. Stay tuned to GoXavier.com for more information.
