Musketeers Extend Win Streak, Top Pirates in Three Sets

Xavier volleyball captured its fourth straight BIG EAST match on Friday night
CINCINNATI - Junior Sofia Peterson recorded a team-high 10 kills and .625 hitting percentage on Friday night as the Musketeers won their fourth straight BIG EAST match, defeating Seton Hall in three sets at Cintas Center.

Xavier moved to 10-3 in BIG EAST play and 14-10 on the year, while the Pirates dropped to 11-15 (5-9 BIG EAST).

Makayla Agin, Abbey Bessler and Kristen Massa all added eight kills for the Musketeers. Xavier hit .292 in the match, while limiting the Pirates to a .152 hitting percentage.

McKena Estes had a team-high 22 assists for Xavier. Mackenzi Humm added 12 assists and two of the Musketeers five service aces on the night.

Defensively, the Musketeers had 10 more blocks (12-2) than the Pirates - their third straight match with 10 or more kills and sixth of the season. Peterson led the team with four block assists, while Alexis Newsome and Brooke Betts both had three block assists and one solo block.

Bessler added a team-high 11 digs to go along with two service aces. Meredith Klare chipped 10 digs in the win.

The first set had eight ties and five lead changes. Tied at 13, the Musketeers used a 12-4 run to close the set - winning the stanza, 25-17. XU had six of its blocks in the first set.

Xavier jumped out to an early 7-3 advantage in the second set and never relinquished the lead. The Musketeers led by as many as seven down the stretch before capturing the frame, 25-18. Peterson hit .714 in the set with five kills.

The Pirates led 7-1 in set three before the Musketeers went on a 12-5 run to take a 13-12 advantage. With the set tied at 15, Xavier scored four unanswered points to take its largest lead of the frame, 19-15. The Musketeers fought off a late rally by Seton Hall to win the set, 25-22.

Xavier returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 7 against Villanova. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. from Cintas Center.Â
