Baseball Drops Home Opener, 7-4, to Northern Kentucky

CINCINNATI -- Xavier baseball dropped its home opener to Northern Kentucky, 7-4, on Friday afternoon at Hayden Field. The Musketeers move to 8-17 on the year.
The Norse (7-15) scored seven runs over the first two innings to build an early lead they would never relinquish. NKU scored five runs on six hit and one error in the first frame before adding two runs on two hits in the second inning.
A two-out RBI single up the middle by Selby Chidemo in the fourth inning put the Musketeers on the scoreboard. Xavier added two runs in the following inning to make the score, 7-3, on an Andre Jernigan RBI single through the right side and a Derek Hasenbeck sacrifice fly.
Xavier scored its final run in the ninth on a Jernigan RBI single down the left-field line to score Joe Forney.
Brad Kirschner (2-4) took the loss for Xavier, surrendering 10 hits and seven runs (five earned) in four innings of work. Greg Jacknewitz threw five scoreless innings of relief and posted five strikeouts.
Evan Korson (2-2) earned the win for NKU, striking out five over five innings. The sophomore allowed six hits and three runs. Tyler Miller posted the save as the junior pitched the final three innings.
Jerningan finished the day 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored to pace the Xavier offense. Joe Forney added two hits and run, while Ethan Schmidt went 2-for-4.
NKU had one more hit (12-11) than Xavier. The Musketeers left four more runners on base (11-7) and had one more error (1-0).
Cody Kuzniczci went 3-for-5 with two runs and a RBI for NKU, while David Head went 2-for-5 with three RBI, two runs and homer.
Game two of the weekend series is slated for 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 28.
