June 9, 2015
CINCINNATI - Former Musketeer golfer Andy Pope topped the leaderboard at the U.S. Open Qualifier at the Bears Club in Jupiter, Fla. over the weekend to qualify for the U.S. Open, held this year in Washington. Pope joins Jason Kokrak (2007) as the only Musketeers to ever qualify for the event.
After shooting a 73 in round one of the qualifier, Pope used a second-round score of 67 to draw into a tie for first with a total score of 140 (-4). Pope's score matched Luke Donald and Jack Maquire to grab three of the four spots available for 70 participants. Sam Horsfield took the fourth spot.
Pope played for the Musketeers from 2002 to 2006 finishing with a career scoring average of 73.83 through 132.5 rounds, ranking in the top-10 on Xavier's all-time career scoring average list. In his senior season of 2005-06, his scoring average was 72.92. As a Musketeer, Pope competed in four NCAA tournaments, collected two Atlantic 10 team championships, in 2003 and 2005, and won the individual A 10 title in 2004.
"We're really proud to have a second former player qualify for the U.S. Open," said Xavier men's golf head coach Doug Steiner. "Andy has performed well on the Web.com Tour, and to tie Luke Donald in the championship qualifier and we're thrilled he's going to get a chance to compete at the U.S. Open."
Steiner will join Pope for the Rust-Oleum Championship in Westlake, Ohio, near Cleveland. The Web.com Tour event, held from June 11-14, will be broadcast on The Golf Channel.
The 2015 U.S Open will be held from June 15-21 at Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash. The event will be broadcast on FOX networks nationwide.Â
