Rachel Piccus Named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week
09.14.15 | Women's Soccer
NEW YORK – A day after anchoring a Xavier defense that forced a third-straight shutout, Xavier women's soccer junior goalkeeper Rachel Piccus was honored by the conference office as the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week.
Piccus finished the weekend with a pair of clean sheets, marking three in a row and four overall for the Musketeer defense. On Friday, Piccus collected seven saves as Xavier topped IUPUI, 2-0, at home. The home stand continued with EKU on Sunday, where Piccus finished with five saves as the Musketeers moved to 5-2-0 after knocking off the Colonels, 4-0.
"Rachel plays bigger than she is," said Xavier head coach Woody Sherwood after Sunday's game as he praised Piccus and the Xavier defense on the back-to-back shutouts. "This weekend she had a couple of big saves in both game and helped keep us in a good position."
After being used primarily as a sub during her first two seasons, the Cleveland, Ohio native has moved into a starting role for 2015, clocking nearly 580 minutes through seven games. In those seven games, Piccus has collected 35 saves with an .814 save percentage, and earned five wins. Those five wins bring her career total to seven, with a career GAA of 0.97 as well as three complete shutouts.
This is Piccus' first weekly honor from the BIG EAST Conference. She is the fourth Musketeer to earn recognition from the conference, joining Samantha Dewey (Rookie of the Week – 8/24, Weekly Honor Roll – 9/7), Tori Doss (Weekly Honor Roll – 8/24) and Kenadie Carlson (Weekly Honor Roll – 8/31). A Xavier women's soccer student-athlete has been honored in each week of the 2015 season thus far, as the Musketeers have surpassed the totals wins and doubled the number of goals from the 2014 season in just seven games.
Xavier returns to the pitch on Friday to host Ohio in the first of a pair of home games against in-state rivals. The Bobcats and the Musketeers kick off at 6:30 on Friday, before the Cincinnati Bearcats visit XU Soccer Stadium at 6:30 on Sunday.
