Wolverines Top Musketeers, 3-1, in Bobcat Invitational Opener

ATHENS, Ohio – Xavier volleyball dropped its opening match of the Bobcat Invitational, 3-1 (21-25, 18-25, 27-25, 11-25), to Michigan on Friday morning. The Musketeers move to 2-2 on the year and return to the court at 7:30 p.m. tonight against Ohio.
Abbey Bessler was the lone Musketeer in double-figure kills with 10, while Lauren Frilling and Kristen Massa both added nine. McKena Estes and Mackenzi Humm combined to post 37 assists with Estes recording 19 and Humm posting 18, respectively.
Defensively, Meredith Klare recorded a match-high 31 digs. Frilling added four blocks on the day as the Wolverines posted six more total blocks (13-7).
The opening frame had eight ties and two lead changes before Michigan pulled away for a 25-21 victory. After dropping the second set, 25-18, the Musketeers rallied to win the third set, 27-25.
Trailing 24-22 in set three, Xavier scored three unanswered points to regain the lead. The Musketeers captured the set on a block assist by Frilling and Laura Grossman.
Michigan held Xavier to a .082 hitting percentage in the match. The Wolverines were led by Caroline Knop who posted a double-double, recording 12 kills and 14 digs.
