Musketeers fall in four sets, move to 2-4 on the year
ATHENS, Ohio – Xavier volleyball dropped its final match of the Bobcat Invitational on Saturday morning, falling in four sets (25-21, 14-25, 22-25, 18-25) to LSU at the Convocation Center.
The Musketeers (2-4) captured the opening set, 25-21, by taking advantage of 15 LSU errors. Lauren Frilling posted three of the team's seven service aces in the match in the first set.
The Tigers (1-5) responded by posting a .391 hitting percentage in the second frame, winning the set 25-14. Mimi Eugene had four of her eight kills for the Tigers in the set.
LSU would go on to win set three, 25-22, before closing the match with a 25-18 victory in set four.
Kristen Massa led Xavier with 10 kills as the sophomore outside hitter wrapped up tournament play with a team-high 36 kills. Sofia Peterson added eight kills, while Abbey Bessler was held to single-digit kills for the first time this year with six.
Mackenzi Humm posted a match-high 23 assists, while Meredith Klare recorded a team-high 21 digs. Samantha Foti also added 14 digs in the loss.
Both teams finished with seven service aces and five team blocks. LSU posted a .193 hitting percentage, while Xavier ended with a .072 attack percentage.
Toni Rodriguez led the Tigers with 18 kills. Cheyenne Wood added 20 assists and Haley Smith posted 24 digs.
Xavier returns to action on Sept. 11-12 at the Aloft Seminole Invitational in Tallahassee, Fla.
