Farr's Double-Double Powers No. 7 Xavier Past Marquette
01.16.16 | Men's Basketball
Senior forward posts 16 points and a career-high 19 rebounds
MILWAUKEE - A 16-point first half and a career high 19 rebounds for James Farr helped the No. 7 Xavier Musketeers top Marquette, 74-66, at the BMO Harris Bradley Center on Saturday afternoon. Farr's first half performance helped fuel a 28-6 first half run that erased an eight-point deficit and put the Musketeers in control as Xavier moved to 16-1 on the season and 4-1 in BIG EAST play.
Farr's 19 rebounds topped his previous career high of 14, set twice (against Missouri on Nov. 17, 2015 and Murray State on Nov. 24, 2014) and are the most by an XU player since Travis Taylor had 19 against St. Louis in 2013.
Trevon Bluiett led the Musketeers with 18 points after an 11-point second half. Edmond Sumner posted 15 points and five assists in his first game back from injury.
The Musketeers hit a pair of baskets early to take a 4-2 lead less than four minutes into the game before Marquette put together a 10-0 run to jump out to a 12-4 lead just over five minutes into the game.
Xavier responded with a 7-3 run, capped by a three from Edmond Sumner in his first game back since leaving the game against Villanova on Dec. 12 with a head injury. The run brought the Musketeers to within four, 15-11, with 12:40 to play in the first half.
A three for the Golden Eagles briefly extended the lead back to seven before a 21-0 run for the Musketeers, including 10 points for Farr and seven for Bluiett, gave Xavier a 32-18 lead with under eight minutes to play in the first half. During that run the Musketeers held the Golden Eagles scoreless for nearly eight minutes.
MU broke its scoreless streak to start an 8-1 run of its own to get as close as seven late in the first half, but four more points for Farr fueled five unanswered for the Musketeers, extending the lead back to 12 before a basket by MU's Henry Ellenson at the buzzer sent the teams into the break with the Musketeers leading 38-28.
Farr finished the first half with 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor. Farr's seven rebounds also led the Musketeers as Xavier owned a 21-18 advantage on the boards at the half.
Early in the second half, MU chipped away at the Xavier lead, getting as close as seven, 41-32, but five points for Bluiett in the first two minutes helped the Musketeers maintain a multiple-possession lead.
The Musketeers maintained at least a 12 point lead through the second half, extending the lead out as many as 16 until a 7-2 run cut the Xavier lead down to 58-49 with under seven minutes to play, marking the first time the Musketeer lead was in single digits since early in the second half.
A pair of three from Myles Davis helped the Musketeers extend the lead back to double figures, leading 67-55 with 3:39 to play.
A late 5-1 run for the Golden Eagles would get the Xavier lead down to seven, 70-63, with 39 seconds remaining on the clock.
Two Bluiett free throws and a Jalen Reynolds dunk pushed the lead back to 11 before a three by Marquette set the final score at 74-66 in favor of the Musketeers.
Xavier outrebounded Marquette, 49-38, including holding a 37-23 advantage on defensive rebounds.
MU's Henry Ellenson led all scorers with 20 points.
Xavier returns home to host Georgetown on Tuesday, Jan. 19 at the Cintas Center. The Musketeers and the Hoyas are set for an 8:30 p.m. tip on FOX Sports 1.
