XU sophomore finishes five strokes off top of leaderboard
CASA DE CAMPO, D.R. – Xavier sophomore Jose Montaño (Cochabamba, Bolivia) shot a 2-over score of 290 to place in a tie for 10th at the 2016 Latin America Amateur Championship, which wrapped up on Sunday evening at the Teeth of the Dog course at Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic.
Former XU golfer John Streibich (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands) also competed at the event, landing in a tie for 41st overall at 14-over.
The four-day event was won by Paul Chaplet of Costa Rica, who fired a 3-under score of 285.
With the victory, Chaplet earns an invitation to the 2016 Masters Tournament in April, as well as exemptions into The Amateur Championship (conducted by The R&A) and the U.S. Amateur Championship (conducted by the United States Golf Association). He also earns spots in final qualifying for The 145th Open Championship and the 2016 U.S. Open.
ABOUT THE LAAC:
Invitations for the championship are sent to the leading players from the 29 IOC-recognized countries and territories from this region that are current members of the International Golf Federation. Each country is automatically provided with two positions, which are to be filled by their best-ranked players from the World Amateur Golf Ranking as of Oct. 7, 2015.
If there is only one player or there are no players from the country in WAGR, a federation is able to nominate one or two players accordingly provided the player(s) have a handicap of 5.4 or less. The host country can nominate enough players, if needed, to fill up to six positions.
The remainder of the field is filled by taking the next best-ranked players from WAGR.
To be eligible for the tournament, a player must be:
• An amateur player under the USGA/R&A Rules of Amateur Status
• A citizen of the country represented
• Listed in WAGRTM for the country represented (will not apply to nominated players)
