Xavier falls at St. John’s, 57-41, on Sunday afternoon
QUEENS, N.Y. - Senior forward Briana Glover became the 24th member of the Xavier 1,000-point club on Sunday afternoon as the Musketeers dropped a 57-41 contest at St. John's.
The Mason, Ohio, native finished with a team-high eight points on 3-for-6 shooting. Jada Byrd, Imani Partlow and Martha Thompson each added five points.
Xavier has now dropped three straight games, moving to 14-6 (5-4 BIG EAST) on the year. St. John's improved to 16-4 (7-2 BIG EAST) on the year. The Red Storm moved to 3-2 in the all-time series with the Musketeers.
Xavier outscored the Red Storm, 24-22, in the second half, but could not overcome an 18-point halftime deficit (35-17). The Musketeers hit their first three shots of the game to lead, 6-2, but would miss their next nine as the Red Storm closed the first quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 16-8 lead.
St. John's outscored Xavier, 19-9, in the second quarter for the 35-17 halftime score. The Red Storm also held a 26-12 advantage on the glass at the break.
St. John's finished the game with 21 more rebounds (47-26) than Xavier, led by Jade Walker's game-high 11 rebounds. She also added a game-high 20 points on 9-for-12 shooting.
Byrd led the Musketeers with five rebounds, while Aliyah Zantt and Leah Schaefer both had three. Defensively, Xavier had six more steals (8-2) than St. John's.
Both teams shot under 40 percent from the floor with the Musketeers hitting 32 percent of their shots and St. John's posting a .393 field-goal percentage. Xavier was 8-for-15 from the foul line and the Red Storm was 9-for-12.
Danaejah Grant added 12 points and nine rebounds for the Red Storm. Akina Wellere chipped in eight points and Imani Littleton pulled down eight rebounds.
The Musketeers also held Aliyyah Handford to three points on 0-for-6 shooting. She entered the game averaging 17.3 points per game.
Xavier returns to action on Friday, Jan. 29 against Butler. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. from Cintas Center.
