Volleyball Picks Up Road Win at Providence

Musketeers top Friars in four sets, win fourth straight match
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Xavier volleyball opened a four-match road swing with a four-set (25-17, 25-22, 23-25, 25-19) win at Providence on Friday night.
The Musketeers (15-11, 9-4 BIG EAST) have now won seven of their last eight matches, including four straight. The Friars moved to 13-16 (1-12 BIG EAST) with the loss.
• Abbey Bessler posted a match-high 14 kills with nine digs, just shy of her 12th double-double of the year. The outside hitter added two service aces and one block.
• Kristen Massa and Sofia Peterson both added 12 kills and four digs. Brooke Betts chipped in eight kills with a match-high .462 hitting percentage.
• Meredith Klare recorded a match-high 21 digs, her sixth match with 20 or more digs this season. She also added two service aces.
• Xavier had four more total team blocks (10-6) than Providence with Brooke Betts pacing the Musketeers with five. Alexis Newsome added four blocks.
• Mackenzi Humm posted her fifth double-double of the season and second in as many matches with 35 assists and 13 digs.
• Xavier never trailed in the opening frame and scored four of the final six points to win the set, 25-17. Sofia Peterson had four kills with a .429 hitting percentage.
• Tied at 20, the Musketeers closed the set on a 5-2 run capped by a Kristen Massa kill to make the match score, 2-0. Sofia Peterson had five kills and hit .500.
• Set three featured nine ties and three lead changes. Tied at 23, the Friars took advantage of a Xavier error followed by a Cayla Veverka kill to make the match score, 2-1.
• Trailing 12-10, the Musketeers scored eight unanswered points to take an 18-12 lead they would never relinquish. Xavier took the match with a 25-19 set four victory.
• Brooke Betts had five kills with a .833 hitting percentage. Abbey Bessler also had five kills.
• Xavier returns to action at Creighton on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 2 p.m. ET.
