Musketeers Fall in Puerto Rico Classic Opener to No. 20/22 Oklahoma

Sooners defeat Musketeers, 81-69, at South Point Arena
LAS VEGAS – After nine ties and five lead changes, No. 20/22 Oklahoma pulled away from Xavier, 81-69, in the opening game of the Puerto Rico Classic – Las Vegas. The three-day tournament is being held at South Point Arena.
The Musketeers moved to 7-2 on the year, while the Sooners improved to 8-2.
• Kindell Fincher was one point shy of matching her career high in scoring as the sophomore guard led the Musketeers with 16 points. She was 6-for-10 from the floor and 3-for-6 from behind the arc. Fincher added four steals and two rebounds.
• Raeshaun Gaffney was the only other player in double figures as the senior guard scored 14 points on 5-for-12 shooting. She added a team-high six rebounds to go along with two assists.
• Marquia Turner added eight points on 3-for-6 shooting, while adding a game-high six assists and five rebounds.
• Xavier matched its season low in turnovers with 12. The Musketeers posted a .463 field-goal percentage in the loss, their third highest percentage on the year.
• The Musketeers knocked down eight 3-pointers, their fourth game of the year with eight or more made three pointers.
• Xavier went 6-for-8 from the floor to open the game - fueled by seven points by Raeshaun Gaffney - to take a 16-8 advantage at the media timeout. Oklahoma responded by closing the quarter on a 13-4 run to take a 21-20 lead.
• Xavier tied the game five times in the quarter before the Sooners closed the half on a 6-0 run to make the score 43-37 at the break.
• The Musketeers hit 53.8 percent of their shot attempts, going 7-for-13. Raeshaun Gaffney led all scorers with 14 points on 5-for-7 shooting.
• Oklahoma held an 18-15 advantage on the glass. Marquia Turner, Raeshaun Gaffney and Martha Thompson all had three rebounds for Xavier.
• Oklahoma started the second half on a 13-7 run to take its first double-figure lead (56-44) of the game at the 5:21 mark. A three pointer by Kindell Fincher got the Musketeers within seven, 63-56, at the end of the quarter.
• Kindell Fincher scored six points, going 2-for-3 from behind the arc.
• Xavier scored six unanswered points to open the quarter and get within one, 63-62. Oklahoma never relinquished the lead as they shot 50 percent from the floor in the final quarter to pull away for the 81-69 victory. The Sooners held Xavier to its lowest field-goal percentage of the night (.286) in the final quarter of play.
• Tournament action continues on Wednesday, Dec. 20 against Southern Miss at 3 p.m. EST.
