Xavier Drops BIG EAST Road Contest at Creighton

Bluejays top Musketeers, 63-52, on Friday night
OMAHA, Neb. – Xavier women's basketball dropped a 63-52 BIG EAST contest at Creighton on Friday night. The Musketeers moved to 9-4 (1-1 BIG EAST), while the Bluejays improved to 8-4 (2-0 BIG EAST).
Xavier led by one point at halftime, but couldn't overcome a third quarter that saw the Bluejays outscore the Musketeers, 20-7.
• Maddison Blackwell was the lone Xavier player in double figures, scoring 10 points on 5-for-10 shooting. Raeshaun Gaffney and Imani Partlow both chipped in eight points.
• Xavier held a 39-34 advantage on the glass. Maddison Blackwell and Leah Schaefer both pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. Anniina Äijänen added five rebounds for Xavier.
• Xavier moved to 8-1 on the year when outrebounding its opponents and 6-1 when leading at the half.
• Xavier held a 23-7 in bench points and had two more steals (7-5) than the Bluejays. Maddison Blackwell had a game-high two steals.
• Marquia Turner chipped in seven points and a team-high four assists. Raeshaun Gaffney also added three assists.
• Both teams shot under 40 percent from the floor as Xavier went 19-for-54 and Creighton went 20-for-54.
• Xavier went 4-for-7 from the floor to start the game, getting four points from Maddison Blackwell to take an early 8-0 lead. Creighton closed the quarter on a 10-4 run to make the score 12-10 at the end of the first quarter.
• The Musketeers hit 50 percent (6-for-12) of their shot attempts in the first quarter.
• Creighton built a five-point advantage, 21-16, at the 5:59 mark before the Musketeers responded with a 10-4 run to close the half. Jada Byrd scored on a layup with 20 seconds left on the clock to give Xavier the 26-25 advantage.
• Xavier was 12-for-25 from the floor in the first half. Imani Partlow led the Musketeers with six points on 3-for-3 shooting. Xavier held an 18-13 advantage on the glass.
• Creighton opened the second half on an 18-3 run on 7-for-9 shooting to take a 43-29 advantage. The Bluejays held Xavier to a .167 field-goal percentage in the quarter and outscored the Musketeers, 20-7, to lead 45-33 at the end of the quarter.
• Xavier got within 10, 50-40, on back-to-back free throws from Imani Partlow at the 5:35 mark, but Creighton maintained its double-figure lead for the remainder of the contest.
• Xavier opens a three-game homestand on Monday, Jan. 2 against St. John's at 7 p.m. The game will be aired nationally on CBS Sports Network.
