Second-Half Comeback Falls Short Against St. John’s

Xavier outscored the Red Storm, 32-25, in the second half
CINCINNATI - Xavier out scored St. John's in second half on Friday night, but could not overcome an early deficit as the Musketeers dropped a 69-56 contest at Cintas Center.
The Musketeers (17-9, 8-7 BIG EAST) out scored the Red Storm (19-7, 10-5 BIG EAST), 32-25, in the second half to get within six points on a Briana Glover layup with 7:57 left in regulation. St. John's posted an 11-4 run to end the contest to win its second straight game and remain in second place of the conference standings.
Xavier led 20-18 after one quarter of play before St. John's out scored the Musketeers, 26-4, in the second quarter to take a 44-24 lead into the locker room. The Red Storm hit 51.4 percent of their shot attempts in the first half, while Xavier was held to a .300 field-goal percentage.
Marquia Turner matched her career high in scoring with 14 points on 5-for-7 shooting. Glover added 11 points to round out the double-figure scorers for Xavier.
Xavier won the battle on the glass, 40-34, with Glover and Turner leading the Musketeers with six each. Maddison Blackwell and Aliyah Zantt both added five.
Zantt also added three of Xavier's six steals, moving her career total to 192 - ranking second all-time at Xavier.
St. John's forced 17 Xavier turnovers, turning the miscues into 21 points. The Red Storm also out scored the Musketeers, 28-20, in points in the paint.
Danaejah Grant led the Red Storm with a game-high 29 points. Aliyyah Handford added 18 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
The Musketeers return to action on Sunday, Feb. 21 against Seton Hall. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
Sunday's game will serve as 'Senior Day' for Glover, Jenna Crittendon and Zantt.
