04.29.16 | Men's Golf
CALLAWASSIE ISLAND, S.C. - The Xavier men's golf team travels to South Carolina today for the BIG EAST Championship. The three-day event returns for the third straight year to the Callawassie Island Golf Club on the Magnolia and Dogwood Courses, which will be playing 7,047 yards and par 72.
The Musketeers will be competing against Butler, Creighton, DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, St. John's, Seton Hall, and Villanova with an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship on the line. Xavier comes into the tournament as the top seeded team, according to Golfstat.
The Musketeers have the two highest-ranked players, reigning BIG EAST Golfer of the Week sophomore Jose Montaño as the one and freshman Daniel Wetterich the two. Montaño goes into the championship with a stroke average of 72.29, and is on a run of finishing in the top three in each of his last five tournaments. Wetterich, with a stroke average of 73.11, has posted three top-10 finishes in his last four starts.
Xavier's lineup will be Montaño in the number one position, followed by Wetterich, graduate student John Burger, and juniors Fox Morrissey and David Long.
Last year, Xavier finished third at the championship, nine strokes behind champion Marquette. Jose Montaño finished in seventh place individually with a final score of 221 (+5).
Sunday morning's tee times will be determined by seed and player rankings, while Monday and Tuesday morning's tee times will be assembled from the previous day's leaderboard. One round will take place each day beginning at 8 a.m. eastern time.
Live scoring will be available through Golfstat.com.
