Pair helped Musketeers earn top seed going into this weekend's championship
NEW YORK – A pair of Musketeer golfers earned a spot on the five-man All-BIG EAST First Team, the conference office announced Friday. Jose Montaño and Daniel Wetterich picked up the honor after helping the Musketeers earn the top team ranking going into the BIG EAST Men's Golf Championship, held in Okatie, S.C., from May 1-3.
Montaño, a native of Cochabamba, Boliva, is a repeat selection from last year and is the highest ranked individual, according to GolfStat, going into the BIG EAST Championship. The sophomore has finished in the top three in each of his last five tournaments, and is averaging 72.29 strokes per round.
Last year, Montaño finished seventh at the conference championship, earning a spot in the NCAA Regional held in Noblesville, Ind., and earned the honor of BIG EAST Rookie of the Year.
Wetterich, a freshman from Cincinnati, Ohio, has enjoyed three top-10 finishes in his last four tournaments and five overall. He's averaging 73.11 strokes per round for his rookie campaign.
In addition to Montaño and Wetterich, Lloyd Jefferson Go of Seton Hall, Freddy Thomas of DePaul and Nick Nelson of Marquette were named to the All-BIG EAST First Team. All three earned all-conference honors last year. All selections were made by the league's head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own players.
The BIG EAST Championship kicks off on Sunday, May 1 and runs through Tuesday, May 3, at Callawassie Island Golf Club, with one round of the 54-hole tournament beginning each day at 8:00 a.m. ET.
