Sunday’s game against XU Men’s Club team has been cancelled
CINCINNATI – The Xavier women's soccer team will move its spring game against UIndy to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 9, at the XU Soccer Complex, moved up from its original start time of 5:30 p.m. The game against the Xavier Men's Club Team originally scheduled for Sunday, April 10, has been cancelled.
"Due to our numbers and personnel, we have at times been limited in how we would like to play, but that's not uncommon with teams during the spring season. We have asked several players to play out of position in order to put a group of eleven on the field and they have responded very well."
Xavier has played to a 2-2 record during spring play so far, picking up wins over Cleveland State and Eastern Kentucky while falling to Ohio State and Wright State.
"We have had several players step in and do a great job filling new roles," said rising senior goalkeeper Rachel Piccus. "This has been a challenging spring in terms of fitness and the team has really bought in to how this will help us get to a BIG EAST Championship."
The Musketeers lost six seniors from the 2015 season and are without the seven newcomers joining Xavier in 2016 for spring play, giving several players an opportunity to earn time on the field.
"This spring has presented a great opportunity for some players who normally don't see significant minutes, to step up and make regular contributions," said Sherwood. "We are really thin due to some injuries and it being the spring season with no seniors, but we have managed to put a pretty attractive product on the field. Our goal in these final two matches is to be more consistent with our quality of play."
After playing UIndy on Saturday, the Musketeers will close out the spring at home against Indiana State on Saturday, April 16 at 6:30 p.m.
"This spring has epitomized what I love about Xavier," said Piccus. "This group of girls makes it fun to come out and compete everyday with my best friends. The bond we have has allowed us to make some huge strides on the field in the past nine months."
Sherwood echoed Piccus' sentiment on the team's mentality in spring play.
"This group has been one of my favorite all time due to their willingness to compete every day, bring a focused, professional mentality to training, and play good soccer."
