Baseball Sees Eight-Game Winning Streak Snapped in Weekend Opener vs. Creighton

Musketeers drop to 9-4 in conference play in first loss since April 23
CINCINNATI – It was a tight contest between the top two teams in the BIG EAST on Friday, but Xavier baseball dropped its weekend opener, 4-2, against visiting Creighton at Hayden Field.
The Bluejays got the go-ahead run in the sixth and added another on a wild pitch in the ninth, as XU stranded a pair in the ninth to seal it.
XU moves to 22-27 overall and 9-4 in the BIG EAST, while the loss also snaps the Musketeers eight-game winning streak – which was the team's longest since a nine-game spurt from March 6-18, 2011.
Creighton improved to 33-11 overall and 11-2 in league play.

· Xavier outhit Creighton 7-5, but stranded a pair of runners in the fifth and the ninth.
· Rylan Bannon paced the offense with a 2-for-4 day at the dish and scored a run.
· Dan Rizzie (1-for-4), Joe Gellenbeck (1-for-3, R, RBI), Andre Jernigan (1-for-4), Nate Soria (1-for-2, RBI) and Will LaRue (1-for-3) also added hits for the Musketeers.

· Zac Lowther (5-5) was solid, going seven innings and allowing just three runs while striking out two. The sophomore lefty has now gone at least five innings in all 13 of his starts this season.
· Taylor Williams came on to pitch the final two innings, surrendering just one run on a wild pitch. The freshman allowed one hit and struck out one.

FOURTH INNING:Â Joe Gellenbeck led off the inning with a walk and was followed by a double to left center by Andre Jernigan. With runners on second and third and no outs, Nate Soria lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Gellenbeck and make it a 2-1 game.Â
FIFTH INNING:Â Rylan Bannon kickstarted a two out rally with a single to left. Dan Rizzie followed with a hit through the right side, moving Bannon to third. Joe Gellenbeck batted next and hammered a pitch to center for an RBI single, scoring Bannon and tying the game at 2-2.
