Trips to Pittsburgh, Dayton highlight non-conference schedule
Add to calendar
CINCINNATI – Xavier women's soccer announced its schedule for Fall 2016 on Wednesday. The Musketeers play a 10-game non-conference schedule, highlighted by a trip Pittsburgh, before entering a fourth year of BIG EAST play.
"One new, unique opponent is ACC opponent in Pittsburgh, we try to add one of those games to the schedule each year," said Xavier head coach Woody Sherwood. "The rest of the non-conference looks pretty similar, some competitive teams in our region, then certainly the grueling gauntlet of the BIG EAST which will start late September."
After hosting Western Kentucky for an exhibition on August 14, Xavier opens up the regular season at home against Evansville on August 19 at 6:30 p.m.
After taking on the Purple Aces, the Musketeers head out on the road for a four-game road swing, traveling to Eastern Kentucky on August 21 to close out the opening weekend of play.
Xavier travels north the next week, heading to Ball State on Friday, August 26, for a 5 p.m. match with the Cardinals.
The Musketeers will then travel east for a Sunday afternoon match against Pittsburgh on August 28. It marks the third match in series history and the first since 2009 and opens a home-and-home series with the return game bring the Panthers to Cincinnati in 2017.
The road trip closes out on Friday, Sept. 2, at former Atlantic 10 rival Dayton for the first regular-season match-up against the Flyers since the Musketeers joined the BIG EAST for the 2013-14 season.
After returning home to host a Northern Kentucky (Sept. 6) and Duquesne (Sept. 9), Xavier uses three road games at regional opponents – at Youngstown State on Sept. 11, at Ohio on Sept. 16 and at IUPUI on Sept. 18 – as a final tune-up for the BIG EAST schedule.
"Now that we're going to be in our fourth season (in the conference) I think we're all pretty familiar with what those teams bring to the table and it should be a great BIG EAST season," said Sherwood of the 2016 conference slate.
Xavier opens BIG EAST play on Sept. 25 at DePaul and continues to Providence for the final game of a five-game road swing on Sept. 29.
Xavier hosts Georgetown and Marquette for its conference home-openers the first week in October, hosting the Hoyas on Oct. 2 and the Golden Eagles on Oct. 6.
After a trip to Seton Hall on Oct. 9, the Musketeers play three of the final four matches at XU Soccer Complex, hosting Villanova (Oct.15) and reigning BIG EAST Regular Season Champions St. John's (Oct. 20) before heading to Omaha on Oct. 23 to face Creighton.
Xavier hosts Butler for the final regular season match, taking on the Bulldogs on Oct. 28.
"This is a realistic chance for us to make the BIG EAST Tournament," said Sherwood. "That's the focus, and, taking the big step we did this year in the BIG EAST, there's actually numbers behind it where they believe we're really close to making that happen."
Xavier's 2016 roster adds seven newcomers to the mix of returnees, including a pair of players with collegiate experience.
"It's the first time we've got a couple junior college players coming in which will add a little maturity to that freshman class since they already have two years of college under their belts," said Sherwood.
The incoming class joins a roster of returnees that closed out a successful spring schedule in April, where a limited roster gave a number of returning Musketeers opportunities to expand their role on the field.
"It was a tough spring in terms of physical grind," said Sherwood. "But in terms of team development and installing our system for next fall, I think it's going to pay off big."
"It really was one of my favorite teams that I've had in my 19 years," said Sherwood. "They showed up and really were professional in training every time, they brought a lot of energy, they enjoyed themselves out there. That really will pay off for us in the fall with that attitude, energy and enthusiasm that the group will bring back with them in August."
