National Team will compete in 2016 FIBA Americas U18 Championship
Colorado Springs, Colo. - Xavier head basketball coach Chris Mack served as a court coach for the first round of the 2016 USA Basketball Men's U18 National Team training camp this week in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
"When I got the call from Sean (Miller) and he asked me if I would be interested in helping out for the U18 team and go through the tryout process, it was a no brainer for me, I didn't even have to check my calendar," said Mack. "It's been a really exciting three days and any time you can represent your country in a sport you love so much is an awesome experience."
Training camp for the 2016 USA U18 National Team, featuring 26 athletes, took place over the last week at the United States Olympic Training Center.
"It's been a great experience, just to represent your country and work with such talented players at a really cool age, because at the same time they're really talented, they're also still learning, and to be as receptive as they were to coaching, it's been really fun these past few days."
Training camp will resume July 11-15 in Houston, and the final 12-member team will be announced before the team departs for Valdivia, Chile. The USA U18 National Team will play in the 2016 FIBA Americas U18 Championship from July 19-23.
"The athleticism and the competitiveness of these guys was very, very impressive. It's sort of the next guard of USA Basketball coming up and I think the US is in really good hands with guys like these," said Mack. "It's a different feeling when you put on a jersey that says USA across it. Just watching the Dream Team over the years, the Olympic teams, how much it's meant to guys like LeBron, Durant, Carmelo Anthony… and rightfully so."
Mack earned Xavier's first-ever National Coach of the Year honors after being selected as the 2015-16 USBWA Henry Iba National Coach of the Year as well as the CBS Sports and Basketball Times magazine National Coach of the Year. In addition, Mack earned BIG EAST Conference Coach of the Year by CBS Sports and Bleacher Report.
Mack led Xavier to a 28-6 overall record this past season, finishing 14-4 and in second place behind eventual National Champion Villanova in the BIG EAST Conference. Xavier's 28 wins tied for the second-most wins in school history and the 14 BIG EAST wins are a school record as is the final Associated Press Poll ranking of No. 9.
