Sophomore All-BIG EAST golfer has announced transfer to University of North Carolina
CINCINNATI - Xavier men's golfer Jose Montaño has announced his intentions to transfer, choosing to continue his golf career at the University of North Carolina.
"We wish Jose all the best with his academic pursuits and his athletic career," said Susan Cross Lipnickey, Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Services and Senior Woman's Administrator. "Jose has been open with us about his intentions to transfer since early this winter. We thank Jose for two terrific years at Xavier."
The native of Cochabamba, Bolivia closed out the season at the NCAA Regional in Franklin, Tenn., marking the second time in his career he earned an individual berth. Montaño shot a 4-under score of 212 to finish the regional competition tied for 22nd.
The NCAA appearance capped a sophomore season where Montaño earned a pair of BIG EAST Golfer of the Week honors. He picked up three runner-up finishes during his second Xavier campaign, at the Colleton River Collegiate, the Hoosier Collegiate at otter Creek and the Rutherford Intercollegiate, where he shot a career-best round of 66 (-5) in the second round.
Montaño's 66 in the second round marked the lowest round of the season for the Musketeers, and his average score of 72.06 marked a team best on the season.
