Kobashigawa's first Xavier goal is game winner
CINCINNATI - After an extended wait, Xavier celebrated the opening of the 2016-17 athletics season with a win as Xavier women's soccer took the 2-0 win over Evansville at home on Friday evening.
After Xavier went ahead by a pair in the first half, an extended weather delay midway through the second period forced the teams into the locker room for an hour with just under 30 minutes remaining in the match. After the weather cleared, the teams returned to the pitch where the Musketeers held the Purple Aces with out a goal to take the season-opening win.
The Musketeers posted a pair of first half tallies, which would be all they would need. Courtney Kobashigawa scored the game winner in the 29th minutes. The goal, the first of her college career, came off the right side of the box after Kenadie Carlson crossed to her off a pass from Emily Calvani following a corner kick.
The insurance goal came less than five minutes later when an Evansville foul in the box gave Maddie Tierney the opportunity to line up for a penalty kick. Tierney sank the ball in the left corner of the net for her first goal of the season, and second of her career, to give the Musketeers a 2-0 lead in the first half.
Nine different Musketeers attempted shots as Xavier outshot Evansville 13-9. Samantha Dewey had a pair of good looks that forced the UE goalkeeper to collect the save, two of the six shots on goal the Musketeers had on the evening. Kenadie Carlson and Skylar Groth each created multiple opportunities as well.
Rachel Piccus picked up the win, the eighth shut out of her Xavier career. Piccus collected three saves on the evening as the Musketeers, as the defense, anchored by Kobashigawa and Eckerle, who played both all 90 minutes, allowed the Purple Aces to only get three clean attempts at the goal.
"Outside of the first ten minutes of the first half, I thought we were brilliant. Our attacking out of the back, through the midfield was very good. It was a little bit of a challenge coming off an hour long lightning delay, but I thought we did a good job absorbing the last 15 minutes of that game and keeping a clean sheet for the two goal win. we look forward to being back at it on Sunday at EKU."
Xavier heads to Eastern Kentucky University on Sunday, August 21 to face the Colonels at 1:00 p.m.
