Rachel Piccus Named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week

Maddie Tierney named to Weekly Honor Roll
NEW YORK - After collecting a pair of shut outs during the opening weekend of 2016, senior Rachel Piccus was named the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week by the conference office on Monday. Piccus played all 90 minutes in both Friday's 2-0 season opener against Evansville and Sunday's 2-0 win at Eastern Kentucky. Junior Maddie Tierney also picked up a weekly award, earning a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after leading the Musketeers in points after the first two matches.
Against Evansville, Piccus collected three saves in the eighth shutout of her career, holding the Purple Aces scoreless in the season opener. Piccus, a native of Cleveland, Ohio, followed that up with another three-save performance at EKU, finishing with a clean sheet for the second straight game. The win marked the 12th of Piccus' career, with nine of those being complete-game shutouts.
This marks the second time in Piccus' career she's been honored as the Goalkeeper of the Week by the BIG EAST, picking up the accolade during the week of September 14, 2015. Piccus also earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll two times last season (9/21 and 10/26).
Junior midfielder Maddie Tierney also picked up recognition from the conference, earning a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after leading the Musketeers with three total points over the weekend. Tierney scored the second goal of her Xavier career when she knocked in a penalty kick in the 35th minute to put the Musketeers up 2-0. Tierney picked up a third point after assisting on Tori Doss' game winner at EKU, setting the ball up for Doss to bury in the right corner of the net. This marks the first weekly honor from the BIG EAST for the native of Villa Hills, Ky.
The Musketeers are back in action on Friday, August 26 when Xavier travels to Ball State for the second game of a four-game road swing. The Musketeers and the Cardinals are set for a 5:00 p.m. ET first touch.
