Musketeers open BIG EAST play at DePaul on Sunday
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – After taking an early lead at IUPUI, Xavier women's soccer allowed a pair of tallies to give the Musketeers the 2-1 loss in Indianapolis on Sunday afternoon. Xavier closed out the non-conference schedule with a record of 6-3-1, its best non-conference record since the 2013 season.
The Xavier offense pressured early, with Kenadie Carlson getting a pair of good looks in the opening minutes. The third chance was the charm for Carlson, who gave the Musketeers a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute with a shot to the inside far post. The goal marked her third of the season.
Xavier controlled the ball early, owning a 10-2 advantage on shots when the Jags broke into the scoring column on their third shot of the day, tying the game 1-1 in the 21st minute. The Musketeers led IUPUI 13-6 on shots at the break.
After the Jags took the lead early in the second half, Xavier pressured for the equalizer until the final minute, taking four corner kicks in the second half, including two in the final six minutes. Both corners turned into good looks that missed narrowly for the equalizer.
Carlson led the Musketeers with six total shots. Samantha Dewey had three, including a pair on-frame.
After Xavier took the early lead, the Musketeers limited IUPUI on defense for much of the first period, before the Jags found the goal on IUPUI's third shot of the day, tying the game 1-1 in the 22nd minute on a Sierra Bryant goal.
After going into the halftime tied 1-1, IUPUI struck quickly in the second half, with Catherine Raster shooting from eight yards out to put the Jags up 2-1 in the 48th minute.
Toni Bizzarro played the first complete game of her college career, collecting three saves with two goals against. Courtney Kobashigawa and Ellie Eckerle played the full 90 minutes on the Musketeer back line that limited the Jags to five shots on goal.
"Another good college soccer game today. We had eight shots in the first eight minutes of the game and we should have put it to bed. We made a goalkeeping mistake to get them back into the game, and give IUPUI credit, they worked hard, battled and were physical and we couldn't match that. It certainly was not the game we wanted going into BIG EAST play, but hopefully it got our players' attention and we'll be ready for DePaul."
Xavier now moves into its BIG EAST Conference slate, starting out on the road in Chicago to face DePaul on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 2:00 p.m. ET. The game will be streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
Following the DePaul match, the Musketeers close out a five-game road swing at Providence on Thursday, Sept. 29 at 7:00 p.m. before returning home to host Georgetown on Oct. 2, for the BIG EAST home-opener at 1:00 p.m. Please stay tuned to GoXavier.com and @XavierWSOC, the official Twitter account of Xavier women's soccer, for potential changes to time and venue.
