Musketeers close out tournament action at 4 p.m. against Northwestern

DAYTON, Ohio – Xavier volleyball dropped a four-set match (25-22, 23-25, 26-28, 22-25) to Chattanooga on Saturday morning at the Dayton Invitational.

The Musketeers move to 2-3 on the year, while the Mocs improved to 5-1. Xavier concludes tournament action at 4 p.m. against Northwestern.

MATCH NOTES

• Xavier moves to 2-1 in the all-time series with Chattanooga.

• Abbey Bessler had a match-high 22 kills, the second time this season the outside hitter has recorded 20 or more kills. She now has 20 career games with 20 or more kills.

• Sofia Peterson was the only other player with 10 or more kills with 11. The senior also posted a .375 hitting percentage.

• Lauren Frilling added nine kills with a .400 attack percentage to go along with two blocks. All told, the Musketeers had six total team blocks.

• Meredith Klare had a match-high 23 digs, while Samantha Foti added 15 digs. Abbey Bessler was two digs shy of posting a double-double.

SET ONE

• Tied at 20, the Musketeers used a 5-2 run to close out the set. The first set had eight ties and two lead changes.

• Xavier had a solid hitting percentage in the first set, hitting .308 – led by Brooke Betts and Kristen Massa who both hit over .600 and combined for five kills.

SET TWO

• The second set had nine ties with the final tie at 23. Chattanooga took advantage of a service error by Xavier and posted an ace on the final point to win the set. Neither team led by more than three points in the frame.

• Chattanooga posted its highest hitting percentage on the day in the second set, hitting .294.

SET THREE

• The third set was back-and-forth as it featured 22 ties and 12 lead changes. Tied 26, the Mocs took advantage of back-to-back hitting errors by Xavier to win the set.

• Abbey Bessler had seven kills in the set, while Lauren Frilling added six with a .714 hitting percentage.

SET FOUR

• Xavier jumped out to an early 6-2 lead before the Mocs battled back to tie the set at nine. The eighth and final tie of the set was at 20-20 before Chattanooga pulled away fort the 25-22 victory.
